The Complete Guide About Tang Ki
Tang ki (乩童) aka Chinese Spirit Medium – a pretty mysterious bunch, yet familiar throughout Southeast Asia. Are they real? That’s one of the most common questions people ask.
In this post, I will dive into the world of Tangki, sharing insights from my own spiritual understanding, research, readings, and experiences to provide you a comprehensive guide.
What is a Tang Ki (乩童) ?
Tangki serve as a bridge between the human realm and the unseen world. In short, they act as a medium to pass messages from the other realms to us, aiming to assist in solving our problems and life's challenges. To them, they treat this ability as an innate responsibility. All the communication is done with the use of their own body, where they are often possessed and in a state of unconsciousness.

How To Become A Tang Ki
The process of becoming a Tangki can be quite mysterious and varied. While there's no single, universally accepted path, several common narratives emerge. According to source, the following are ways one can become a Tangki:
Tangki Are Real or Fake?
Unfortunately, out of 10 tang ki you came across, 9 are most likely to be fake. This means the entities they channel may not be real deities of higher power (正神) but rather lower-level spirits or even malevolent entities.
There are three distinct types of fake Tangki, and here’s how you can identify them:
The Tangki invited the beings not of higher power and is NOT aware
Many Tangki unknowingly invite lower spirits or wandering ghosts into their bodies. These Tangki may genuinely believe they are channeling a god or deity and may have good intentions in helping others. Unfortunately, they are often victims of their own rituals, unaware of the true intentions and motives of the beings that make use of their physical body. In such cases, even the Tangki themselves may not realize the nature of the entity they have summoned—let alone the general public.
The Tangki invited the beings not of higher power and is FULLY aware
This type of Tangki is the most dangerous, as they are fully aware that the spirits they summon are not higher beings (正神) as what they has claim. Despite knowing this, the Tangki continues to deceive their followers out of selfish motives, such as greed or the desire for fame while also knowing that spirit or devil that possessed on them have certain prophecy abilities (usually the past or your current situation), falsely claim to be possessed by well-known deities, while offering misleading or even foolish advice, all under the guise of "helping."
The Best Actor Award - Act like one
The last type has no spiritual connection whatsoever — they are simply conmen. They don’t know how to summon spirits or gods but are skilled at pretending to do so. These individuals are often excellent actors, adept at manipulating people by reading and interpreting body language. Their goal is to gain your trust and ultimately cheat you out of money.
Note that the light(佛光) of Buddha/God is incredibly bright and powerful that our own physical body will not be able to take it. At most they will guide us alongside, but not fully possessed into our body till we are in an unconscious state.
Why Does My Tang Ki Seem So Accurate?
If you’ve encountered a Tangki that seems accurate, it’s either because you’ve met a rare authentic Tangki (which is unlikely nowadays), or the lower beings they’ve summoned are more powerful than average.
Bear in mind that ghosts, lower beings or wandering spirits know what you are up to depending on their “power”. They want to grow and evolve as well, however they do not have a physical body to accumulate merits so they use people – the Tang Ki as they are the easiest target who already made their body "open".
Don’t assume that lower beings always have evil intentions. Just like humans, there are good ones and bad ones. Some lower beings can indeed be helpful and kind, and they may be able to resolve certain issues. However, their abilities are limited, so they typically address surface problems rather than the deeper, root causes.
Tangki vs. Soul Cultivator: What’s the Difference?
While both Tangki and soul cultivators interact with the spiritual realm, there are key differences:
Tang Ki
Soul Cultivator

Public Perceptions and Feedback I got from people who have experience with a Tang Ki
“The tang ki is a lao beng and the interpreter is a xiao beng”
“Messy!” (referring to their house)
“To me, it’s a gimmick”
“Uneducated and poor, they should save themselves”
“Ah beng. Loud with many ang gong(tattoo)”
“I think is errie, 半信半疑 lo”
Above are the common ones that I come across. Seems like all are negative remarks. I am not going to judge them because of their educational background, financial status or tattoo as this does not affect a man to have a good heart. I just want to highlight the point whereby many mentioned that their house are messy. A side note is that most higher beings like their place to be clean, neat and tidy. A messy house can summon the deity? No way, most likely some Tom Dick Harry spirits.
Most of the time, we can determine if a Tangki (or any medium) is real or fake simply by observing their behavior. While this may not apply to all, someone who frequently uses vulgar language, behaves like a hooligan, engages in drugs, fights, womanizes, or struggles to control their anger and emotions is unlikely to be a true medium. Do you really think the Divine would choose such a person to be their ambassador and act on their behalf?
Out of 10 Tang Ki, 9 are Pathetic
The life of a Tangki can be challenging and even tragic. Imagine you own a house and share it with many people who have access to it. Your soul is supposed to be the master of your body, but the door is left open for visitors—whether good or bad, you don't know—who come and go as they please. They steal your resources and leave the place in complete disarray. How good can your life really be?
The Tangki is damaging their own soul without realizing it, believing all along that they are possessed by a god. With a weakened, sad soul inside, many problems are bound to surface in their lives—whether socially, in relationships, family, finances, or health. I pity them for their ignorance. So if you know one, want to become one, or are one yourself, it’s time to reconsider and return to leading a normal life.
The world of Tangki is complex and multifaceted. While genuine Tangki may exist, it's crucial to approach this realm with discernment and caution. Seek guidance from trusted sources, cultivate your own spiritual understanding, and prioritize your own well-being on your spiritual journey.

1 Response to "The Complete Guide About Tang Ki"
oh my god. I think finally I have a understanding of how it works after reading this article. I have a relative who is a Tang Ki, however, it is known that he change job often, scolds vulgarity and sometimes talk in very loud n rude manner. It’s just the way his character is. Which cause me to wonder how come he can be Tang Ki and god posses him. Leaving me in alot of doubt. My mom said that he did not want this, but it seems like he could not avoid it. He does not charge or collect money most of the time. Just helping people. Other than that, his family often very chaotic, alot of quarrel, and the mom will cry, the son got some health (mental) problems and etc. He is known in our family to be very knowledgable in this area and does alot of praying and etc. What you mention, own home being open to other people to enter and leave as they wish, really kind of hit the nail as I often wonder how come his family so complicated as I often worry for them. haiz
